Currently, a recent study highlights the significant burden of disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI) in Indonesia. This household survey utilized the Rome IV criteria to assess 1,339 participants. Furthermore, the findings provide crucial insights into how these conditions affect psychological health and daily living. This data mirrors trends seen across Southeast Asia and India. Specifically, researchers found an overall DGBI prevalence of 18.2%.
Consequently, bowel disorders emerged as the most frequent subtype, affecting 13.2% of the population. Moreover, gastroduodenal, anorectal, and esophageal disorders followed at lower rates. These statistics emphasize the need for vigilant screening in clinical practice. In addition, participants diagnosed with DGBI reported significantly higher levels of psychological distress.
Specifically, somatization, anxiety, and depression were more common among these individuals. Therefore, their overall quality of life was lower compared to healthy counterparts. Additionally, healthcare utilization rates were markedly higher among this group. Similarly, dietary habits also showed distinct variations. Individuals with DGBI consumed more milk and pasta while reducing their intake of vegetables, legumes, and rice. Ultimately, understanding these patterns is essential for holistic patient management.
