Researchers recently documented the presence of Culex flavivirus Puducherry in the local mosquito population. This represents the first such report from this specific region of India. Specifically, the study focused on Culex quinquefasciatus, which is a well-known vector for diseases like lymphatic filariasis and West Nile virus. Scientists are increasingly interested in insect-specific viruses because they might change how other viruses replicate within mosquitoes. Understanding these interactions is essential for managing vector-borne diseases effectively in endemic areas.
The research team collected mosquitoes from various villages around Puducherry to assess viral prevalence. They screened 150 mosquito pools using PCR techniques targeting the NS-5 gene. Consequently, the study identified a Culex flavivirus (CxFV) prevalence of 3.73%. Phylogenetic analysis further confirmed that the circulating strain belongs to genotype 2. Notably, this genotype shows a wide distribution and high adaptability across different geographic locations.
Furthermore, the study examined the relationship between the virus and the endosymbiotic bacterium Wolbachia pipientis. Many researchers believe that Wolbachia can suppress viral replication in mosquito hosts. In this research, the team compared the relative density of Wolbachia in CxFV-positive and CxFV-negative mosquitoes. However, they found no statistically significant difference in density between these two groups. This suggests that Wolbachia may not directly influence the levels of CxFV in this specific mosquito population under natural conditions.
These findings carry important implications for public health and regional vector management. Since Puducherry was previously endemic for filariasis, understanding these mosquito-microbe interactions is vital. Future strategies for disease control might need to consider how these symbiotic viruses affect transmission risks for pathogenic arboviruses. Overall, this research provides a foundational dataset for future entomological and virological studies in India. In addition, it underscores the need for continuous surveillance of the mosquito virome to better predict outbreak potential.
While Culex flavivirus only infects mosquitoes and does not cause disease in humans, it can influence the transmission of human pathogens like West Nile virus. Understanding its prevalence helps researchers predict changes in mosquito vector competence.
This specific study found no significant association between the density of Wolbachia and the presence of the virus. Therefore, Wolbachia might not naturally suppress this specific insect-specific virus in field populations of Culex mosquitoes.
This is the first report of CxFV in Puducherry, adding to the map of known mosquito-specific viruses in India. It highlights the importance of monitoring local mosquito biomes to improve future biological control strategies.
