Alcohol use disorder (AUD) affects millions worldwide, including a significant portion of the population in India. Beyond the physical symptoms of withdrawal, 50-80% of patients experience significant cognitive decline. This impairment often hinders social functioning, employment, and interpersonal relationships. Therefore, clinicians urgently need an efficient cognitive function assessment AUD tool to monitor recovery and guide rehabilitation strategies effectively.
Traditional neuropsychological tests (NT), such as the Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB), are often time-consuming. They require specialized evaluators and place a heavy burden on patients. Consequently, many practitioners skip these essential evaluations in routine clinical practice. However, a recent pilot study suggests that tablet-based Psychomotor Function Tests (PFT) could bridge this gap. Researchers evaluated 20 patients with AUD after detoxification and compared PFT results with established traditional measures.
The findings revealed that PFT scores significantly correlated with existing assessments like Raven's Colored Progressive Matrices and the Clinical Assessment for Attention (CAT). Specifically, the PFT effectively distinguished between healthy controls and patients with AUD. Psychomotor function was notably worse in patients, yet showed stabilization and reliability over a two-month follow-up period.
A primary benefit of the PFT is its simplicity. Unlike manual testing, the PFT is self-administered via a tablet. This reduces the need for specialized personnel and minimizes rater error. Furthermore, the study showed that PFT results remained stable over time, demonstrating high reliability. Because patients with AUD often face fluctuating attention levels, a quick and repeatable test is invaluable for longitudinal monitoring.
In the Indian context, where patient loads in de-addiction centers are high, such tools could revolutionize care. Integrating digital screening allows for early detection of executive dysfunction in primary care settings. In addition, it helps doctors tailor behavioral therapies to the patient's specific cognitive capacity, ultimately improving treatment outcomes.
