India's largest standalone health insurer, Star Health and Allied Insurance, is launching a new product named Value Plus. Specifically, the annual premiums for Value Plus will range between ₹15,000 and ₹16,000. Furthermore, the insurer expects this product to contribute around 10% of its future revenue.
Interestingly, the insurer decided to exclude metro cities from this budget-friendly offering. Healthcare inflation and hospital claims costs continue to rise significantly in metropolitan areas. In contrast, non-metro markets demonstrate greater structural profitability. For instance, loss ratios in smaller cities are currently running 4 to 5 percentage points lower than the company's overall average of 69%. Consequently, the lower operating costs in these regions allow the company to offer cheaper premiums without compromising on coverage quality.
The launch aligns with increasing insurance demand following the Indian government's GST waiver on health insurance premiums. This policy change has successfully driven higher renewals and improved persistency rates. Moreover, Star Health is expanding its distribution channel by appointing nearly one lakh new agents, with 80% of them operating in tier-2, tier-3, and tier-4 areas. To complement this, the insurer is rolling out \"Pratham,\" a preferred hospital network initiative. This program aims to minimize discharge delays and enhance patient satisfaction through direct hospital collaborations.
