Youth violence remains a significant public health crisis, especially in neighborhoods with limited resources. Homicide represents the third leading cause of death for American adolescents and the primary cause among Black youth. Consequently, medical experts and social scientists seek innovative ways to mitigate these risks. The "Forging Hopeful Futures" (FHF) study introduces a community-partnered youth violence prevention intervention aimed at addressing the intersecting social and economic drivers of conflict. By leveraging community partnerships, this protocol establishes a framework for sustainable behavioral change and mental health support.
The FHF program comprises 12 sessions delivered by trusted community facilitators over a period of 6 to 12 weeks. Specifically, the curriculum focuses on conflict resolution, leadership development, and job readiness. This approach differs from traditional models because it explicitly addresses social determinants like limited economic opportunity. Furthermore, facilitators connect participants with mentorship and employment opportunities to foster long-term stability. While the comparison group receives standard wellness checks, the FHF participants engage in deep peer-led discussions about relationship norms and racial justice.
Currently, the trial operates across 16 neighborhoods in Pittsburgh and the Washington, DC region. Researchers have already enrolled over 500 participants between the ages of 13 and 19. Notably, the study utilizes the RE-AIM framework to evaluate implementation effectiveness across diverse urban settings. This ensures that the program remains practical for real-world application. Additionally, the team uses generalized linear mixed models to analyze violence involvement and perpetration trends over time.
The study protocol aims to provide rigorous evidence to guide future policy decisions and clinical practices. If the intervention proves effective, it could serve as a scalable model for cities globally. Moreover, by focusing on economic justice, the program interrupts the cycle of violence before it escalates into chronic trauma.
