West Bengal healthcare will receive a massive overhaul following a major funding announcement by the Centre. Consequently, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced a Rs 3,000 crore sanction in the current fiscal year to revamp state healthcare. This major initiative aims to address long-standing gaps in public health delivery.
The Union Health Ministry has approved a total package of Rs 3,000 crore. Out of this, the Centre has sanctioned Rs 2,103 crore specifically for the National Health Mission. Additionally, the central government has already transferred the first installment of Rs 500 crore to initiate immediate ground-level work. Furthermore, this financial support will enable the state to quickly upgrade primary and secondary health centers. West Bengal healthcare facilities will undergo significant infrastructure improvements under this scheme. Therefore, residents can expect better diagnostic tools and enhanced emergency services in the coming months.
The state will soon roll out the Centre's flagship Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme. Chief Minister Adhikari stated that card distribution will begin in July. In the first phase, nearly six crore Swasthya Sathi cardholders will transition to this national network. Moreover, fresh applicants who did not have the state-run cards can also enroll. This shift will provide families with a coverage of Rs 5 lakh per year for secondary and tertiary care. Consequently, patients will gain access to a wider network of empanelled hospitals across India.
To extend these benefits to the state’s massive migrant population, the government plans to sign a new pact. Specifically, West Bengal will ink an agreement in Delhi in early June to join the Ayushman Arogya Mandir network. This strategic move will benefit over one crore migrants living outside the state. In addition, the state government plans to ramp up clinical recruitment. The administration will fill vacant positions for doctors, nurses, and paramedical staff within three months. Therefore, this recruitment drive will address the chronic staff shortages in public health facilities.
