Recent evidence reveals a concerning correlation between vaping and eating disorders among university populations. As e-cigarette use surges, clinicians must address how nicotine impacts body image and dietary habits. Researchers gathered data from the 2021-2022 Healthy Minds Study to evaluate these risks. Consequently, they analyzed patterns specifically in the context of student-athletes and their peers.
The study found that 18.1% of college students vaped within the past 30 days. Furthermore, approximately 32.8% of the total respondents screened positive for eating disorder risk using the SCOFF questionnaire. The study associated vaping with a significantly higher risk of eating disorders, with an adjusted odds ratio of 1.45. This suggests that students who use e-cigarettes are nearly 1.5 times more likely to struggle with disordered eating habits.
Doctors should maintain a high level of suspicion when treating college-aged patients. Although athletes face unique pressures regarding performance and weight, the study found that athlete status did not significantly alter the risk. Similarly, the link between these behaviors remained consistent regardless of sex. Therefore, universal screening for both nicotine use and dietary habits is essential during routine check-ups.
In addition, healthcare providers should explore whether patients use vaping specifically as an appetite suppressant. Because these issues often co-occur, a multidisciplinary treatment plan usually yields the best outcomes for students. Moreover, addressing the psychological drivers of nicotine use may simultaneously help manage disordered eating triggers. Early intervention remains the most effective way to prevent long-term health complications.
The research suggests that the association between vaping and eating disorders is similar for both athletes and non-athletes. While athletes face unique performance pressures, the risk remains a universal concern across the campus population.
Many individuals use the nicotine found in e-cigarettes to suppress their appetite. Consequently, this behavior can create a dangerous link between substance use and maladaptive eating habits.
According to the findings, the association between e-cigarette use and eating disorder risk did not differ significantly by sex. Both male and female students who vaped showed a higher likelihood of screening positive for disordered eating.
