Bishoftu town sits only 40 km from the largely malaria-free city of Addis Ababa. However, it remains a persistent malaria-endemic region. A recent twelve-year study highlights significant shifts in disease patterns within the town. Researchers analyzed over 252,610 blood films from 2011 to 2022 to track these changes. Consequently, they identified 5,696 confirmed malaria cases. This data reveals a fluctuating burden that necessitates aggressive surveillance. Understanding the urban malaria transmission risk is now vital for regional public health protection.
Specifically, the findings show that Plasmodium vivax accounts for 63.8% of cases. Meanwhile, P. falciparum represents 31.0% of the total infections. Additionally, the highest incidence occurred in 2017 with 804 cases. Most infections affected adults older than 14 years. Several environmental and social factors drive this persistence. Abundant water bodies and recreational pools provide ideal mosquito breeding sites. Furthermore, mass gatherings like the Irreechaa festival increase human exposure to vectors.
Climate change and changing land-use patterns further complicate control efforts. Moreover, the construction of a major new airport in Bishoftu will likely increase visitor traffic. This mobility heightens the danger of spillover to Addis Ababa. While authorities have found little evidence of Anopheles stephensi in Bishoftu yet, its potential spread remains a major concern. Therefore, targeted control measures must address these demographic shifts and infrastructure projects. Proactive surveillance is essential to prevent the re-emergence of malaria in urban hubs.
The 12-year trend analysis revealed that Plasmodium vivax is the dominant parasite, accounting for approximately 63.8% of cases, followed by P. falciparum at 31.0%.
Increased visitor traffic and infrastructure development can facilitate the movement of infected individuals and invasive mosquito vectors, thereby heightening the overall urban malaria transmission risk.
Findings indicate that individuals aged 14 and above constitute 66.3% of the cases, suggesting a high burden among the adult population which impacts regional productivity.
