In addition to inconsistent pain guidance, the scoping review underscored significant gaps concerning patient compliance and standard terminology. Remarkably, most clinical trials failed to formally measure or report whether participants adhered to prescribed home exercises. Because multi-session daily regimens demand substantial discipline, non-adherence could easily explain suboptimal outcomes observed in clinical practice. Furthermore, diverse nomenclatures between dental, maxillofacial, and physiotherapy disciplines create diagnostic ambiguity and hinder cross-specialty collaboration. Consequently, future research must adopt standardized terminologies, compare single-session versus multi-session daily models, and implement digital tracking tools for adherence. For practicing clinicians, establishing realistic exercise schedules and using visual diaries will significantly enhance treatment compliance. Multidisciplinary communication between dentists, physical therapists, and pain specialists ensures consistent terminology and fosters durable functional recovery for challenging clinical cases.
Clinical evidence demonstrates that active oral opening movements and neuromuscular motor control exercises are the most commonly prescribed interventions. Clinicians design these exercises to restore normal interincisal opening, enhance jaw stability, and eliminate pathological lateral deviations during chewing or speaking. By monitoring adherence through exercise logs or mobile reminders, clinicians can accurately distinguish between treatment failure and insufficient dosage, allowing appropriate program modifications and preventing unnecessary invasive interventions.
