Breastfeeding provides critical health advantages for mothers and infants alike. However, the COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted traditional in-person care. Consequently, many health services implemented synchronous breastfeeding support to maintain continuity of care. This qualitative systematic review evaluates the perspectives of both mothers and healthcare professionals regarding these remote interventions.
The researchers reviewed 21 studies to identify key themes in digital lactation support. Most mothers accepted these platforms as a viable alternative to hospital visits. Furthermore, women appreciated the convenience of receiving expert advice without leaving their homes. This flexibility often led to increased breastfeeding confidence during a stressful period. Similarly, healthcare providers recognized the value of reaching patients who might otherwise face geographical barriers.
One primary benefit of synchronous breastfeeding support is the interactive nature of the video consultations. Unlike static educational materials, these sessions enable providers to offer real-time feedback on latching techniques. Moreover, clinicians can assess the home environment to provide more personalized recommendations. As a result, many families feel more supported and empowered in their breastfeeding journey.
Nevertheless, some significant hurdles remain for widespread adoption. Technical issues like unstable internet connections can interrupt the flow of communication. Additionally, the lack of physical touch remains a challenge for mothers who require hands-on assistance. Therefore, future programs must focus on improving accessibility and refining scheduling processes to meet evolving maternal needs.
Remote support provides convenience, reduces travel barriers, and allows for real-time interaction between mothers and lactation experts in a comfortable home setting.
Common challenges include technical connectivity issues, the absence of hands-on physical guidance, and occasional scheduling difficulties between mothers and providers.
