In addition to growth monitoring, recent research by Lauer JM et al. highlights the impact of SQ-LNS pediatric nutrition on child development. Specifically, the team conducted an 18-month trial in Lusaka, Zambia, to evaluate intestinal health. They investigated whether small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements (SQ-LNS) could reduce environmental enteric dysfunction (EED) and systemic inflammation. While experts know SQ-LNS improves growth and survival, the specific biological pathways remain unclear.
During the trial, the study analyzed 302 children aged 27 to 35 months using serum biomarkers and rectal swabs. Moreover, researchers looked for changes in gut microbiome alpha diversity, beta diversity, and systemic inflammation. Furthermore, they measured markers such as intestinal fatty acid-binding protein (I-FABP) and C-reactive protein. However, the results showed no broad changes in intestinal health markers. Consequently, the supplement did not significantly alter the overall microbial community composition.
Therefore, these findings suggest that the clinical benefits of SQ-LNS likely come from increased nutrient availability. Although the study found a lower abundance of Enterococcus in the intervention group, it detected no other major shifts. As a result, this evidence implies that doctors should focus on nutritional density for growth outcomes. Ultimately, managing EED might require different environmental or clinical interventions beyond standard lipid-based supplements.
SQ-LNS provides essential micronutrients and a small caloric boost to prevent stunting and wasting in young children. While it supports linear growth, it may not directly resolve intestinal inflammation.
According to the Zambian study, 18 months of supplementation did not lead to significant changes in gut microbial diversity or overall community structure in children.
