Sijunzi decoction sarcopenia management is gaining attention as a potential therapeutic strategy for the elderly. Sarcopenia involves the progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength. This condition severely impacts the quality of life in geriatric populations globally. Recently, researchers investigated the efficacy of Sijunzi decoction (SJZD) in treating this age-related muscle decline. The clinical study involved sixty-two elderly patients divided into two groups. While the control group received standard care, the research group also consumed the herbal decoction. Initially, both groups had similar baseline characteristics. However, the outcomes differed significantly after the treatment period.
The results showed substantial improvements in several clinical areas. Specifically, the research group demonstrated higher grip strength and faster walking speeds. Furthermore, patients reported enhanced nutritional status and improved cognitive function scores. In contrast, the control group did not show these extensive gains. Notably, body mass index and prealbumin levels increased in the research group. These findings suggest that SJZD effectively targets the multi-factorial nature of geriatric muscle wasting. Consequently, it may offer a viable supplementary option for patients struggling with physical frailty.
Network pharmacology revealed that the active ingredients in SJZD target 36 specific genes associated with muscle loss. Consequently, these ingredients primarily influence the interleukin-17 and TNF signaling pathways. The study also found significantly reduced serum levels of inflammatory markers. Specifically, levels of Interleukin-6 and C-reactive protein dropped after treatment. Additionally, SJZD lowered levels of myostatin, which is a protein that naturally inhibits muscle growth. By reducing peripheral blood inflammation, the decoction fosters an environment conducive to muscle preservation and repair.
Moreover, the therapy appeared remarkably safe for the elderly participants. Researchers monitored markers for liver and kidney function throughout the study. Specifically, levels of alanine aminotransferase and creatinine remained within healthy ranges. Therefore, SJZD presents a promising integrative approach for managing muscle health in aging adults. Practitioners should consider these results when designing comprehensive care plans. Integrating such herbal interventions could potentially improve overall functional independence in the elderly population.
