Cervical cancer remains a significant health burden, especially in developing regions where screening tools are sometimes limited. Consequently, the search for reliable cervical cancer biomarkers has intensified to improve early diagnosis. A recent case-control study evaluated the diagnostic and prognostic utility of serum Cytokeratin 5 (CK5) and p63. These researchers aimed to provide more specific, non-invasive options for clinical monitoring in high-burden settings.
Researchers conducted a case-control study involving 50 women with newly diagnosed cervical cancer and 50 healthy controls. Using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), the team quantified serum levels of both CK5 and p63. Notably, cancer patients showed significantly higher levels of both proteins. Specifically, CK5 levels averaged 286 ng/L in patients compared to 77.5 ng/L in the control group. Similarly, p63 levels reached 35.1 ng/mL in patients versus 7.5 ng/mL in healthy women. Furthermore, ROC analysis revealed exceptional diagnostic accuracy, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.96 for CK5 and 0.97 for p63.
Beyond initial diagnosis, these cervical cancer biomarkers also reflect the clinical stage of the disease. Patients with advanced-stage cancer exhibited significantly higher serum levels than those in the early stages. Therefore, CK5 and p63 serve as independent predictors of advanced disease in multivariate analysis. This correlation suggests that clinicians might use these markers to monitor treatment response or detect early recurrence. While these findings are promising, doctors should use them alongside established cytological and histopathological methods to ensure comprehensive care.
Traditional screening usually relies on cytology or HPV testing. While these methods are effective, serum biomarkers offer a non-invasive, blood-based diagnostic tool with high sensitivity for staging.
