Salivary DNA methylation (DNAm) protein proxies, known as EpiScores, are revolutionizing how clinicians understand childhood obesity epigenetic signatures. Researchers recently explored these non-invasive tools to identify biological mechanisms behind early-life adiposity. This approach offers a stable alternative to traditional blood tests. Furthermore, these signatures help bridge the gap between social exposures and physical health outcomes.
EpiScores translate complex DNA methylation patterns into readable protein proxies. In a recent study, researchers analyzed 105 EpiScores against BMI z-scores in school-aged children. Consequently, fifteen scores showed significant associations. Specifically, proteins like VEGFA and MMP-12 demonstrated strong positive correlations with higher adiposity. These findings suggest that immune and vascular remodeling occurs much earlier than previously thought.
The study also highlights how socioeconomic status (SES) influences these molecular markers. However, the effect estimate for MMP-1 was modestly altered by social confounding.
