"Wherever the art of Medicine is loved, there is also a love of Humanity."
— Hippocrates

Psychological flexibility serves as a cornerstone of mental well-being within the framework of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). Essentially, psychological flexibility describes the human capacity to remain open to difficult internal experiences while continuing to pursue valued life actions. Conversely, psychological inflexibility involve rigid attempts to avoid or control these distressing thoughts and feelings. A recent study investigated how these processes cluster within individuals and how these clusters relate to clinical symptoms of depression and anxiety.
Researchers conducted a latent profile analysis on a sample of 1,000 Korean young adults. This subgroup-based approach allowed the team to identify distinct patterns of coping rather than looking at variables in isolation. Consequently, three unique profiles of ACT processes emerged among the participants: high flexibility, moderate flexibility, and high inflexibility. The study found that individuals naturally cluster into either adaptive or maladaptive coping styles.
The results highlighted a clear correlation between these latent profiles and mental health outcomes. Specifically, participants categorized in the high flexibility profile reported significantly lower levels of depression and anxiety. In contrast, those identified in the high inflexibility profile exhibited more severe clinical symptoms. Furthermore, the data indicated that women were more likely to be classified within the high inflexibility group. Interestingly, the researchers noted that cultural factors might influence the specific function and impact of experiential avoidance within these populations.
These findings suggest that psychological flexibility and inflexibility are often polarized within the population. Clinicians should recognize that patients often fall into distinct clusters of coping. Therefore, interventions focusing on moving a patient from an inflexible profile to a flexible one could be vital for treating mood and anxiety disorders. Tailoring ACT interventions to address specific profile characteristics may improve therapeutic efficacy.
Psychological flexibility is the primary goal of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). It involves staying present and acting according to one's values, even when experiencing uncomfortable thoughts or emotions.
Latent profiles help clinicians understand the specific patterns of coping used by a patient. By identifying whether a patient falls into a high inflexibility cluster, providers can better predict symptom severity and customize treatment plans.
