Cardiovascular disease (CVD) stands as the primary cause of mortality for individuals living with psoriasis. Despite this well-established link, structured psoriasis cardiovascular risk prevention is frequently absent from standard dermatological workflows. Chronic systemic inflammation in psoriasis accelerates atherosclerosis, making early intervention critical. A recent randomized clinical trial, the TEXTME PSO study, explored whether a mobile health (mHealth) intervention could effectively engage patients in managing these systemic risks.
This single-center study, conducted in Australia, randomized 111 adults with dermatologist-confirmed psoriasis. The intervention group participated in the TEXTME PSO program, which delivered four automated text messages per week for six months. These messages focused on healthy lifestyle choices, including diet, exercise, and smoking cessation. Meanwhile, the control group received standard care. Researchers primarily measured changes in the 13-item Patient Activation Measure (PAM), which gauges a patient’s confidence and knowledge in managing their health.
The results were compelling. Participants receiving the text messages showed a statistically significant improvement in patient activation scores compared to the usual care group. Furthermore, the intervention group demonstrated better adherence to the Mediterranean diet and increased levels of physical activity. Additionally, patients exhibited a deeper understanding of the link between their skin condition and heart health. These findings suggest that simple, low-cost digital tools can effectively bridge the gap in preventive care.
For clinicians in India, where psoriasis prevalence is significant and CVD burden is high, these insights are particularly valuable. Utilizing mHealth strategies allows for continuous patient support outside the clinic. Consequently, healthcare providers can empower patients to adopt heart-healthy habits, addressing the systemic nature of psoriatic disease beyond just skin lesions.
