Regardless of Vitamin D levels, prenatal depression remains a strong predictor of childhood externalizing problems. Additionally, Vitamin D deficiency is extremely prevalent in regions like India. Consequently, maintaining maternal 25(OH)D sufficiency is still recommended for overall fetal brain health. However, practitioners should prioritize integrated mental health support for pregnant patients to safeguard child development.
While Vitamin D is vital for fetal brain development, this study suggests it does not fully eliminate the behavioral risks associated with prenatal depression. It may, however, help reduce specific internalizing symptoms like anxiety or withdrawal.
