The study identified several major obstacles that hinder support. Specifically, many clinicians prioritize mental health stability over smoking cessation, fearing that quitting might exacerbate psychiatric symptoms. Additionally, healthcare professionals often expressed a pessimistic view, doubting the ability of women with complex mental health needs to quit successfully. Furthermore, those categorized as 'signposters' frequently lacked specific knowledge regarding the biological and psychological intersection of nicotine and mental health. This lack of confidence can lead to missed opportunities for vital health conversations during pregnancy.
To address these challenges, the research emphasizes the importance of integrated care across specialties. Facilitators for success include offering flexible timing for support and ensuring that smoking cessation services are fully embedded within maternity and mental health settings. Moreover, clinicians must receive targeted training to build confidence in communicating the harms of smoking without causing undue distress. Therefore, a multidisciplinary approach is necessary to provide responsive and empathetic support that meets the unique needs of each woman.
