Customizing pediatric assistive technology involves a highly complex and individualized process designed to support functional independence. However, research indicates that if devices do not fit properly, children often abandon them shortly after delivery. A recent study examined 27 children and young adults to understand these usage patterns and abandonment rates. Consequently, findings revealed a significant 37% abandonment rate among users of customized assistive technology (AT). This highlights a critical gap in the current service delivery model for younger populations.
The study showed that most products aimed to improve activities of daily living, sleep, and mobility. For instance, parents and therapists noted that satisfaction with the product directly correlated with sustained use. Furthermore, users who perceived an improvement in their quality of life were far less likely to stop using the devices. Therefore, clinicians must focus on identifying unmet needs accurately during the initial development phase.
Systematic follow-up after device implementation acts as a vital safety net for families. Additionally, providing ongoing training helps children adapt to the technology as their physical needs change over time. Because many abandonment cases occur within the first year, early intervention by therapists is essential. In conclusion, careful tailoring and regular assessments significantly enhance the therapeutic value of assistive devices.
Early abandonment usually results from an improper fit or the device failing to meet the child’s specific daily needs. Satisfaction with the product and perceived improvements in quality of life are the strongest predictors of continued use.
Providers can improve retention by accurately identifying unmet needs and ensuring the device is carefully tailored to the individual. Implementing a systematic follow-up schedule after delivery allows for necessary adjustments and ongoing training.
