Developing a unified framework for orthodontic CPD standards harmonization is essential for modern dentistry. A comprehensive survey across 41 European countries recently revealed a complex landscape of professional education. While most nations require continuing professional development (CPD), the specific mandates vary significantly. Therefore, practitioners and regulators must collaborate to bridge these educational gaps. For instance, the high degree of heterogeneity in credit systems complicates the mobility of specialists across borders.
The survey results highlight that annual requirements range widely from 14 to 220 credits. Consequently, this creates a fragmented educational environment between neighboring countries. Furthermore, only 55% of orthodontic society heads understood the exact accreditation criteria for their systems. This lack of clarity often hinders the continuous professional growth of specialists. However, conferences and workshops remain the most popular methods for earning credits. Naturally, these interactive activities provide valuable hands-on experience for clinicians. Additionally, many countries require these credits to be earned within a fixed five-year cycle.
Standardizing these educational parameters will likely improve clinical outcomes for patients worldwide. It also facilitates international cooperation among various orthodontic societies. Specifically, aligning credit systems could allow for easier cross-border recognition of professional qualifications. Although Europe faces unique challenges, these insights offer a useful roadmap for other regions, including India. Ultimately, a harmonized system ensures that every patient receives care based on the latest scientific evidence and validated clinical protocols.

Participation in conferences (97%), seminars (95%), and specialized workshops (84%) are the most common ways for orthodontists to earn professional development credits.
