Recent research provides a clearer understanding of Obstructive Sleep Apnea immune profiles by analyzing large-scale datasets. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is not just a respiratory issue but a systemic inflammatory condition. Therefore, investigators utilized the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and Mendelian Randomization (MR) to map these changes. Furthermore, the Mendelian Randomization analysis established a causal link between genetic markers for OSA and specific lymphocyte variations. Specifically, OSA reduces the expression of CD3 on Natural Killer-T (NKT) cells and increases IgD expression on specific B-cell subsets. This disruption impairs the maturation and activation of B-cells, potentially weakening the immune system. Consequently, these immune signatures could help clinicians stratify risk more effectively for patients with severe sleep disorders.
Clinicians can use these findings to guide personalized treatments for sleep-disordered breathing. Because OSA disrupts lymphocyte homeostasis, targeted immunomodulation might be a future therapeutic avenue. Notably, NKT cell deficiency is associated with increased cancer comorbidity in sleep apnea patients. Therefore, monitoring these immune profiles may identify patients at higher risk for systemic complications. Early intervention with CPAP or other therapies might help reverse some of these inflammatory markers and restore balance.
