Neonatal mortality remains a critical global health challenge. Therefore, identifying neonatal mortality predictors is a top priority for modern healthcare systems. A recent 2024 retrospective cohort study conducted in Tigray, Ethiopia, evaluated neonates admitted to intensive care units to determine factors influencing survival. The research revealed that approximately 16.8% of admitted neonates did not survive, with a median survival time of 27 days.
The study utilized a systematic random sampling of 357 neonates to assess survival dynamics. Key findings highlighted that rural residence and a lack of antenatal care (ANC) significantly increased the risk of death. Moreover, infants born to HIV-positive mothers faced nearly three times higher mortality risks compared to their counterparts. Delayed breastfeeding also emerged as one of the most critical neonatal mortality predictors in this cohort. Consequently, these findings emphasize the urgent need for improved community-based strategies and better access to prenatal services.
For instance, enhancing ANC access in rural areas can effectively bridge the survival gap. Furthermore, healthcare providers should prioritize educating mothers on the life-saving benefits of immediate breastfeeding. In addition, providing targeted clinical support for HIV-positive mothers can further reduce neonatal complications. Overall, addressing these known neonatal mortality predictors is essential for meeting global child survival targets and improving quality of life for newborns.
