Mosquito-borne diseases remain a persistent global public health challenge, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. Consequently, Zhejiang Province in China implemented the "Four Pest-Free Villages" program to improve community health. This strategic initiative targets four primary pests: mosquitoes, flies, cockroaches, and rodents. A cross-sectional study recently evaluated the program's impact on community knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP). The findings demonstrate that structured community-based interventions are essential for long-term mosquito-borne disease control.
Researchers conducted the study in 2024 across 16 villages in Zhejiang. Specifically, they compared eight program-enrolled villages with eight control villages using stratified-cluster random sampling. The team utilized Chi-square tests and multivariate logistic regression to analyze influential factors. Additionally, they interviewed stakeholders like community managers and public health specialists to assess the project’s overall efficacy.
The results revealed that residents in the Four Pest-Free Villages achieved significantly higher KAP scores than those in control areas. For instance, 63.6% of residents in the program villages attained satisfactory knowledge scores. In contrast, only 40.7% of residents in control villages met the same threshold. Moreover, multivariate analysis showed that higher education levels and program participation were strong predictors of better knowledge.
Furthermore, the qualitative interviews highlighted several key success factors. Stakeholders emphasized that standardized management and strong financial support were vital. Similarly, they noted that multi-departmental cooperation and active community involvement were indispensable for sustainability. Therefore, these findings suggest that similar models could significantly benefit other regions facing high vector-borne disease burdens, including India.
In the Indian context, vector control often faces hurdles like poor community participation and inadequate awareness. Consequently, adopting a holistic "One Health" approach, as seen in the Zhejiang model, could provide a roadmap for more effective prevention. Finally, strengthening local leadership and environmental management remains the cornerstone of reducing mosquito breeding sites.
