Recent research has introduced a predictive Middle Range Theory (MRT) to clarify the concept of Excessive Caregiving Burden. This framework builds upon Betty Neuman's Systems Model to support the validation of this phenomenon as a formal nursing diagnosis. By defining the causal mechanisms, healthcare professionals can better support those struggling under the weight of intense caregiving duties. Consequently, this theory helps bridge the gap between abstract nursing models and clinical practice.
The theory identifies 26 clinical indicators and 23 related factors that manifest in stressed caregivers. Furthermore, it highlights seven populations at risk and five specific associated conditions. These elements create a comprehensive picture of how stressors impact a caregiver's lines of defense. Moreover, the pictographic representation helps visualize the interaction between intrapersonal, interpersonal, and extrapersonal stressors. Therefore, nurses can use these markers to identify Excessive Caregiving Burden before it leads to caregiver burnout or patient neglect.
This MRT provides a practical tool for identifying the manifestation of burden in diverse clinical settings. Additionally, it establishes 16 theoretical propositions relating observable manifestations to etiological factors. Strengthening the scientific basis of nursing practice improves health outcomes for both the patient and the caregiver. Nurses and physicians can now implement more targeted preventive interventions. Standardizing this diagnosis ensures consistent care across different healthcare levels and advances global nursing language.
