Athletes and coaches often wonder if hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle dictate physical performance levels. Understanding how anaerobic power output fluctuates is crucial for optimizing training schedules for women. A recent study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research investigated whether these physiological changes significantly impact high-intensity efforts. Consequently, the findings provide much-needed clarity for recreationally active women and their trainers regarding performance consistency.
Researchers examined ten recreationally active women with regular menstrual cycles to assess performance across three distinct phases. These phases included the early follicular, late follicular, and mid-luteal stages. To ensure accuracy, the team verified these phases using ovulation test strips and self-reported tracking over two full cycles. During the third cycle, participants completed 30-second Wingate anaerobic cycling tests on a Velotron ergometer. Additionally, the researchers measured peak power, mean power, fatigue index, and the rating of perceived exertion (RPE).
The statistical analysis revealed no significant differences in performance metrics across the menstrual cycle phases. Specifically, peak power and mean power remained stable regardless of the hormonal environment. Although mean power showed a large effect size, it did not reach statistical significance. Furthermore, the anaerobic power output measured via anaerobic capacity and the fatigue index showed no meaningful variation. Subjects also reported similar levels of perceived exertion during each testing session. Therefore, the physiological shifts associated with ovulation and menses do not appear to hinder short-duration, high-intensity performance.
These results suggest that recreationally active women can perform high-intensity efforts consistently throughout their entire cycle. Coaches and exercise professionals might not need to implement phase-based modifications for anaerobic training in this population. While individual experiences with symptoms may vary, the objective capacity for power generation remains robust. This study reinforces the idea that women can maintain rigorous training programs without fearing a cyclical drop in performance. Moreover, these insights help dispel myths regarding the necessity of cycle-syncing for every type of physical activity.
Based on recent research, the menstrual cycle phase does not significantly influence short-duration anaerobic power or the rating of perceived exertion in healthy, eumenorrheic women.
Current findings suggest that phase-based modifications to high-intensity anaerobic training may not be necessary, as performance remains consistent across the follicular and luteal phases.
Studies show that peak power, mean power, anaerobic capacity, and fatigue index do not vary significantly across different stages of the menstrual cycle.
