Effective workforce training in MCH Program Evaluation is essential for data-driven decision-making in public health. Specifically, state and local health departments often struggle with program assessment due to limited internal resources or expertise. A qualitative study recently evaluated the CDC-Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Program Evaluation Practicum. By analyzing interviews with eighteen participants, researchers identified how such training strengthens the ability of staff to implement responsive evaluation plans.
The study highlighted several factors that drive success in public health assessment. Notably, internal evaluation capacity and organizational support were critical for sustained progress. Furthermore, the availability of clear data and consistent funding allowed teams to complete evaluation tasks efficiently. Program partners also expressed a deep appreciation for the value of evaluation results. Consequently, these facilitators encourage program sustainability and facilitate long-term improvements in maternal health outcomes.
However, several barriers can hinder these vital efforts. High staff turnover and shifting organizational priorities often disrupt evaluation timelines. Additionally, many programs face significant issues with data collection tools or limited systems access. Identifying these specific challenges early helps programs determine their evaluation readiness. Therefore, future training should focus on real-world examples and collaborative learning to better meet the needs of public health practitioners.
Improving MCH Program Evaluation requires a modified practicum structure. Participants recommended including more real-world examples and providing ongoing evaluation support. Establishing appropriate teams is also vital for success. Additionally, helping programs assess their own readiness for evaluation ensures that resources are not wasted on premature efforts.
The practicum strengthens evaluation capacity within maternal and child health programs. It helps staff develop skills to implement evaluation plans that improve program effectiveness and sustainability.
Common barriers include high staff turnover, lack of access to data systems, and limited internal evaluation expertise. Shifting organizational priorities can also impede the progress of long-term assessments.
