New government figures detailing India Cancer Data reveal a concerning trend for major cancers affecting women. The Union Health Ministry recently tabled data in Parliament showing a steady rise in the incidence and mortality rates for breast, cervical, and ovarian cancers across the country. Therefore, healthcare providers must immediately address the growing burden of these malignancies that primarily affect women. The urgency of improved detection and management is now paramount.

Steadily Rising Morbidity and Mortality

Figures from the National Cancer Registry Programme (NCRP) project a notable increase in cancer cases between 2021 and 2025. For example, breast cancer cases rose from approximately 2.13 lakh to almost 2.4 lakh cases. Furthermore, cervical cancer cases increased from roughly 77,000 to over 79,000. Ovarian cancer cases also climbed significantly, rising from about 45,000 to nearly 49,500 over the five-year period. Consequently, deaths have followed a similar upward trajectory.

Mortality rates show a clear rise. Breast cancer deaths increased from about 91,700 in 2021 to over 1.03 lakh in 2025. Cervical cancer deaths rose from approximately 41,500 to nearly 42,800, and ovarian cancer deaths climbed from around 27,600 to more than 30,000.

Disparities in India Cancer Data and the Need for Accelerated Screening

While large states like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu report the highest absolute numbers, northeastern states present a different challenge. Assam, Mizoram, and Manipur continue to show disproportionately high cervical cancer rates relative to their population size. Oncologists emphasize that this data highlights critical gaps needing immediate attention. Dr. Pragya Shukla, from the Delhi State Cancer Institute, stated the data reinforces the need to accelerate screening, HPV vaccination, and timely patient referral. Moreover, affordable treatment is a crucial element missing in the current framework. Gaps in awareness and early care continue to drive avoidable deaths, a key issue that practitioners must address. Notably, nearly one-third of global cervical cancer deaths occur in India, underscoring the severity of the challenge.

Government Response and Infrastructure Expansion

The Union health ministry stated the rise reflects both increasing disease burden and improved detection due to expanded screening efforts. In response to the growing figures, the Centre is strengthening cancer care under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD). The government currently operates 770 district NCD clinics, 364 district day-care cancer centres, and over 6,400 NCD clinics at the community health centre level. Furthermore, the plan includes approving 297 more district day-care cancer centres for 2025–26.

Population-based screening for breast and cervical cancer targets people aged 30 years and above. This large-scale initiative aims to improve early detection. The expansion also includes new cancer facilities across 22 new AIIMS, alongside 19 State Cancer Institutes and 20 Tertiary Cancer Care Centres.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What is the main cause of the rising cancer cases in India?

Officials suggest the rise reflects a combination of increasing disease burden and improved detection capabilities through expanded population-based screening programs. Additionally, lifestyle factors, late diagnosis, and gaps in awareness contribute to high mortality.

Q2: What preventative measures are critical for women's cancers in India?

Critical preventative measures include accelerating population-based screening for women aged 30 and above for breast and cervical cancer, alongside promoting Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination for adolescent girls to prevent cervical cancer.
