Recent research highlights the profound burden of Hidradenitis Suppurativa sexual dysfunction on patient well-being. Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that typically involves sensitive intertriginous areas. This multi-centered cross-sectional study evaluated 522 patients to determine the prevalence of sexual impairment. Consequently, the findings underscore the necessity of integrating sexual health assessments into routine dermatological care.
The study employed various validated tools, including the Hidradenitis Suppurativa Self-Assessment Tool (HSSA) and the HS-specific Dermatology Life Quality Index (HS-DLQI). Additionally, researchers used the International Index of Erectile Function-5 (IIEF-5) for males and the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) for females. Higher HSSA stages showed a positive correlation with worse HS-DLQI scores. Furthermore, the data indicated that increased disease severity significantly impacts a patient's overall quality of life.
Results showed that sexual health impairment is remarkably common among HS patients. Specifically, 75.3% of male participants reported sexual dysfunction, while 69.8% of females experienced similar issues. Moreover, patients with genital involvement suffered from significantly lower sexual function scores. These high percentages demonstrate that HS is not merely a cutaneous problem but a systemic challenge affecting intimate relationships.
Clinicians must recognize that the psychological and physical burden of HS often translates into sexual health challenges. Therefore, physicians should proactively discuss these issues during consultations. Using screening tools like the FSFI or IIEF-5 can help identify patients who need specialized support. In addition, addressing comorbidities such as depression and anxiety is essential, as these factors further exacerbate sexual impairment. By adopting a holistic approach, healthcare providers can improve both clinical outcomes and the overall quality of life for their patients.
HS causes painful lesions, scarring, and malodorous discharge in intimate areas like the groin and inner thighs. These physical symptoms, combined with psychological distress and body image issues, lead to high rates of sexual dysfunction.
While both genders suffer significantly, this study found slightly higher rates of dysfunction in males (75.3%) compared to females (69.8%). However, both groups experience a severe impact on their quality of life.
While disease management can reduce physical discomfort, studies suggest that sexual health impacts often persist even after skin improvement. Therefore, a multidisciplinary approach involving psychological support and specialized sexology counseling is often necessary.
