Researchers recently explored how Fu brick tea polysaccharides (FBTPs) modulate the immune system through the gut-immune axis. The study utilized an optimized ultrasound-assisted enzymatic extraction protocol to create structurally distinct polysaccharides, known as UAEPS. These polysaccharides possess a lower molecular weight and higher carbohydrate content compared to those from traditional extraction methods. Consequently, these structural features significantly enhance their therapeutic potential.
Functionally, the UAEPS variant exhibited remarkable in vitro bioactivities. These include potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cytoprotective effects. Furthermore, the researchers tested these compounds in an immunosuppressed mouse model to observe their systemic impact. The results showed that the treatment restored immune homeostasis and attenuated multiorgan damage effectively. Notably, the study found that the polysaccharides achieved these results by reshaping the gut microbiota.
The treatment led to a marked enrichment of beneficial bacteria, specifically Lactobacillus. To confirm the causal role of the intestinal flora, the team performed a fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) experiment. Recipients of the transplant mirrored the protective immunomodulatory effects seen in the original subjects. Therefore, the researchers concluded that the activity of these Fu brick tea polysaccharides is mediated through gut microbiota remodeling. This discovery positions UAEPS as a promising candidate for functional food development.
They restore immune balance and reduce organ damage by promoting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria like Lactobacillus and providing antioxidant support.
This method produces polysaccharides with lower molecular weight and higher carbohydrate levels, which leads to superior anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities compared to traditional methods.
