Fever infections in India represent a significant diagnostic challenge for clinicians today. A recent Thyrocare study analyzed over 1.08 lakh patients across the country. Consequently, researchers discovered that nearly 33 per cent of patients tested positive for serious infections. These diseases included typhoid, dengue, malaria, chikungunya, and leptospirosis. Therefore, dismissing routine fever can lead to delayed medical intervention and adverse outcomes for patients.
Typhoid emerged as the most prevalent infection, affecting 18.1 per cent of the study population. Additionally, dengue followed closely at 14.4 per cent. Interestingly, nearly 10 per cent of positive cases involved co-infections. The most common combination was dengue and typhoid. Such overlaps often complicate the clinical diagnosis. Thus, timely laboratory testing remains essential for accurate treatment strategies in primary care.
Laboratory findings showed that fever often reflects deep systemic stress. For instance, low platelet counts appeared in 27 per cent of fever patients. This drop was most significant in malaria-positive individuals. Furthermore, 56 per cent of fever patients exhibited elevated SGOT levels. These abnormalities highlight the importance of comprehensive screening. Moreover, seasonal variations showed dengue peaking in October. Specifically, malaria cases increased during the monsoon months.
