Clinicians often struggle to motivate young adults to maintain regular exercise habits. Consequently, exergames for physical activity have emerged as a potentially transformative solution for modern lifestyles. These platforms combine digital entertainment with bodily movement, yet their effectiveness depends largely on how users view them. A recent cross-sectional study investigated whether college students see these tools primarily as video games or as functional exercise equipment. The results highlight that the way a student categorizes the technology determines their long-term engagement.
The study found that both perceptions significantly influence a student's intention to keep playing. However, viewing exergames as exercise tools provides a stronger motivation for long-term adherence. Specifically, the researchers discovered that different gratifications drive these perceptions. Enjoyment, or hedonic gratification, mediates the relationship between seeing the activity as a \"video game\" and the desire to continue. Conversely, the perceived utility or functional benefit fully explains why those viewing it as an \"exercise tool\" remain committed. Therefore, while fun matters, the belief that the activity provides a workout is what truly secures adherence.
Healthcare providers in India should note that students who find value in the functional \"utility\" of the game are more likely to stick with it. When recommending exergames for physical activity, it is vital to emphasize their practical health benefits rather than just their entertainment value. While the excitement factor initially attracts users, the functional results sustain them over time. Furthermore, integrating these tools into community or university recreation centers could provide a low-barrier entry to active lifestyles. Notably, exergaming can elicit energy expenditure levels comparable to traditional aerobic sessions while providing significantly higher levels of enjoyment and reduced perceived exertion.
