Family caregivers of people living with dementia often face significant psychological and physical stress. In ethnically and linguistically diverse communities, these challenges are frequently compounded by a lack of accessible support. Consequently, researchers are developing digital dementia care resources to bridge this gap. A recent study evaluated 'Draw-Care,' a co-designed, multilingual web-based resource specifically tailored for these underserved populations.
The evaluation involved 30 caregivers, primarily women, with a mean age of 61 years. Researchers employed a mixed-methods approach to assess the platform's efficacy. This included the eHealth Literacy Scale (eHEALS), think-aloud navigation sessions, and Hotjar analytics to monitor user behavior. Furthermore, the study included participants speaking languages such as Vietnamese, Mandarin, and English. The primary goal was to determine the tool's usability, cultural responsiveness, and overall engagement before moving to a randomized controlled trial.
Most participants (93%) successfully navigated the website with minimal support. Overall, the qualitative feedback indicated that the Draw-Care platform was culturally responsive and engaging. However, some technical hurdles emerged during the sessions. For instance, caregivers using smaller screens, such as smartphones, found navigation more complex than those using laptops. Additionally, translation discrepancies were noted in the Vietnamese and Mandarin versions. Nearly half of the participants struggled to identify the 'virtual helper' chatbot interface, leading to recommendations for its removal in future iterations.
Based on the user-testing data, several modifications were implemented to improve these digital dementia care resources. Key changes included simplifying the rating scale from emoticons to a 3-star system and enhancing the visibility of the feedback button. Most importantly, researchers prioritized ensuring linguistic accuracy across all ten available languages. These revisions emphasize the necessity of inclusive design in digital health interventions. By addressing these usability issues, the intervention aims to provide more effective, evidence-based practical assistance to caregivers globally, including those in linguistically diverse regions like India.
