This study evaluated whether intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) improves the extent of tumour resection while reducing postoperative neurological deficits in children undergoing supratentorial brain tumour surgery. The analysis included 41 studies involving 1,908 paediatric patients. Gross total resection was achieved in 76.9% of patients in the IONM group compared with 52.8% in the non-IONM group, while postoperative neurological deficits occurred in 15.1% and 23.1%, respectively. The benefits appeared particularly relevant in tumours involving eloquent cortical regions. The authors concluded that IONM may support safer and more extensive tumour resection; however, the included studies did not provide direct comparisons within the same cohorts, so a causal benefit cannot be established.
