Compulsive Buying-Shopping Disorder (CBSD) has been recognized in clinical history for over a century. However, its exact classification within psychiatric nosology remains a subject of active debate. Recent evidence from a 2026 study has evaluated the diagnostic criteria for Compulsive Buying-Shopping Disorder to better define its clinical boundaries. By interviewing individuals with lived experience, researchers sought to determine if the condition aligns more closely with impulse control disorders or the components model of addiction.
The study analyzed 51 participants using semistructured interviews to assess their experiences against the 2021 Delphi consensus criteria. Most participants reported a persistent and excessive pattern of buying or shopping. Furthermore, they described a significant loss of control over their purchasing behavior. Many individuals used shopping primarily for mood modification, continuing the behavior despite clear negative consequences. These findings suggest that these symptoms are the essential pillars of Compulsive Buying-Shopping Disorder. Clinicians should prioritize these features while ruling out other psychological explanations for the behavior.
Interestingly, the research highlighted that some traditional addiction symptoms are not universal. For instance, intrusive thoughts, preoccupation, tolerance, and withdrawal were less commonly reported by the participants. Consequently, the authors recommend that these be considered additional rather than mandatory features for a diagnosis. Because tolerance and withdrawal are not strictly necessary for all forms of addiction, the study reinforces the recommendation to classify Compulsive Buying-Shopping Disorder as a behavioral addiction. This shift could pave the way for more structured diagnostic interviews and formal recognition in future mental health manuals.
Establishing these empirically informed criteria is a vital step toward standardizing care. Currently, CBSD is often overlooked or grouped under general impulse control categories. However, recognizing it as a specific behavioral addiction allows for targeted interventions. Future research will likely focus on developing validated diagnostic tools for use in large-scale field studies. This progress is essential for providing effective treatment to those suffering from the significant distress and impairment caused by this disorder.
The core symptoms include an excessive pattern of buying, diminished control over shopping behavior, and using shopping to modify mood. Additionally, patients often continue the behavior despite experiencing significant financial or social impairment.
Experts recommend this classification because CBSD mirrors the core components of addiction, such as salience, mood modification, and loss of control. Recent studies show that while tolerance and withdrawal can occur, they are not required to define the addictive nature of the behavior.
