Traditional assessments in microbiology laboratories often rely on stressful spot diagnoses. However, a recent study introduces Bingo Lab as an innovative approach to game-based learning in microbiology. This intervention aims to boost student engagement while effectively identifying learning gaps in a non-threatening environment. Specifically, the study piloted this method in Dentistry and Nursing programs. Furthermore, researchers tracked engagement throughout the session to understand how gamification affects learning dynamics.
The methodology involves five distinct stages: planning, orientation, the Bingo Lab itself, feedback, and reporting. Initially, educators shortlisted 25 "unknown" microbiology spots for a mock revision exam. Consequently, they randomly mapped these spots onto a 5x5 Bingo card. Students earn a "Bingo" by successfully identifying five stations in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line. Additionally, the study measured engagement scores at three intervals. Therefore, the researchers could analyze the shift in student focus as the activity progressed.
The results were quite promising. Importantly, student engagement scores significantly increased from the early stage to the middle of the activity. Furthermore, this high level of engagement was maintained through the end of the session. Interestingly, the study found no significant differences in engagement based on gender. Moreover, performance in the Bingo activity showed a strong positive correlation with overall microbiology grades. Ultimately, the activity creates meaningful learning opportunities and provides instructors with clear feedback on student performance.
