Expanding Healthcare Access in Delhi

The Delhi government recently announced a significant Ayushman Bharat Delhi expansion to include more vulnerable groups under the health safety net. Consequently, the Delhi Cabinet has approved the inclusion of widow and disability pension beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY). This decision, led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, adds approximately 5.5 lakh new families to the existing health security cover. Previously, only about 5.5 lakh families in the capital enjoyed these benefits. However, this latest move effectively doubles the number of eligible households in the city. The administration aims to ensure that no citizen suffers from lack of medical treatment due to financial constraints.

Impact of the Ayushman Bharat Delhi Expansion

Specifically, the scheme now includes 3.97 lakh widows and 1.31 lakh persons with disabilities (Divyang). In addition, the family members of these beneficiaries are also eligible for coverage. This inclusion builds upon the existing health framework that already covers senior citizens over 70 and various frontline workers. Moreover, beneficiaries from the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) and Priority Household (PRS) categories will continue to receive their benefits. Furthermore, Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) and Anganwadi workers remain integral parts of the scheme. Therefore, this policy change creates a more inclusive environment for Delhi's most needy residents.

Implementation and Hospital Network

For effective service delivery, the government has empanelled a network of 208 hospitals across Delhi. This network consists of 156 private facilities and 53 government hospitals. To date, more than 29,120 beneficiaries have already received treatment through the State Health Agency. Furthermore, authorities have issued over 7.2 lakh Ayushman cards in the city so far. This figure includes nearly 2.75 lakh cards specifically for senior citizens. Healthcare providers should encourage eligible patients to register for their cards to ensure seamless access to cashless treatment. Ultimately, this expansion represents a commitment to the health and dignity of every underprivileged family.
