College life presents unique challenges for many young adults. Moreover, the transition often uncovers deep links between ADHD and internalizing symptoms, such as anxiety and depression. Researchers recently conducted a time-series investigation to explore these daily interactions. Specifically, they used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) data from 151 students over 28 days. The findings suggest that certain symptoms act as early warning signs for worsening mental health.
The study found that specific ADHD symptoms predict next-day emotional distress. For instance, increases in difficulty unwinding and difficulty concentrating predicted higher anxiety levels the following day. Conversely, elevated anxiety symptoms also led to increased ADHD symptoms the next day, creating a bidirectional cycle. In addition, putting things off until the last minute strongly predicted next-day depressive symptoms. Furthermore, the study noted that increases in depression symptoms predicted a later increase in restlessness, such as often leaving one's seat.
Contemporaneous results highlighted that difficulty unwinding and difficulty concentrating had the strongest relations with same-day anxiety and depression. Therefore, clinicians should monitor daily fluctuations in focus and relaxation during patient assessments. Additionally, interventions targeting procrastination may significantly reduce the risk of major depressive episodes in students. These temporal relations highlight specific targets for clinical intervention. Finally, these insights help specify microlevel assessments for better long-term patient outcomes.
Internalizing symptoms refer to emotional struggles that occur within an individual, primarily anxiety and depression. In adults with ADHD, these symptoms often coexist due to the chronic stress of managing executive dysfunction and academic demands.
The study indicates that "putting things off until the last minute" is a temporal predictor of major depressive symptoms. This suggests that the inability to initiate tasks may drive feelings of hopelessness or failure the following day.
Difficulty unwinding and difficulty concentrating were found to be the most consistent predictors of next-day generalized anxiety symptoms. Managing these specific symptoms may help break the cycle of worsening anxiety.
