Experts analyzed serum neurofilament Light (s-NfL) levels in 201 patients with diabetic polyneuropathy (DPN). Results indicated that no s-NfL differences existed between DPN and painful DPN. Higher s-NfL correlated with lower intraepidermal nerve fiber density and greater loss of nerve function on quantitative sensory testing but not with pain severity or clinical DPN scales. Findings suggest that s-NfL reflects nerve fiber damage in DPN.
