A recent cross-sectional study has shed light on the complex association between ADHD and CRP levels in adolescents. Specifically, researchers analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to determine if systemic inflammation influences neurodevelopmental outcomes. Consequently, the findings suggest that inflammatory biomarkers might play a critical role in the pathogenesis of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Moreover, this research explores how lifestyle factors, such as physical activity, can influence these biological markers.
The study involved 4,817 adolescents aged 12 to 19 years. Notably, each 1 mg/L increment in C-reactive protein (CRP) correlated with a 9% higher risk of ADHD. Furthermore, participants in the chronic low-grade inflammation (CLGI) group faced a 57% higher risk compared to those without inflammation. Interestingly, the risk of ADHD appeared to peak when CRP reached 2.75 mg/L. Therefore, monitoring inflammatory markers could become a relevant clinical tool for future pediatric assessments.
However, the study also highlights a crucial protective factor. Leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) appears to significantly moderate the risk associated with elevated CRP. Specifically, adolescents who engaged in 60 minutes or more of daily activity showed a weakened association between inflammation and ADHD. In contrast, those with less than 60 minutes of daily movement remained at a higher risk. Additionally, this interaction suggests that regular exercise might suppress the neuroinflammatory pathways that contribute to ADHD symptoms.
These results provide a strong rationale for advocating physical activity in clinical practice. Consequently, doctors should encourage adolescents with ADHD or inflammatory indicators to maintain a robust exercise routine. Because exercise reduces systemic inflammation, it serves as a dual-purpose intervention for both metabolic and mental health. Therefore, integrating lifestyle modifications with traditional treatments could optimize patient outcomes in this population.
