Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is frequently associated with pediatric care, yet its impact on the adult population is profound. Recent data highlighting the burden of RSV in older adults suggests that the virus causes significant morbidity, often rivaling that of seasonal influenza. A large-scale Danish nationwide cohort study investigated over 960,000 cases of acute respiratory infections (ARIs) between 2011 and 2023. This research provides a clear perspective on how RSV affects different age and risk groups in a real-world setting.
Researchers identified that while influenza remains more prevalent overall, the gap narrows significantly in specific vulnerable populations. Out of nearly one million respiratory infections, approximately 1.1% were attributed to RSV. However, the incidence of RSV showed a steady increase over the 12-season study period. Specifically, during the 2022/23 season, the incidence rates among the elderly were notably high. Consequently, healthcare providers must recognize that RSV is not merely a pediatric concern but a major adult health priority.
The study found that RSV in older adults occurs at rates comparable to influenza, especially in those aged 75 and above. Furthermore, the presence of comorbidities significantly amplifies the risk of severe infection. Patients with hematologic diseases and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) faced the highest incidence rates, reaching 868.6 and 679.5 per 100,000 person-years, respectively. These findings are particularly relevant now, following the recent approval of highly effective RSV vaccines. Implementing these vaccines could drastically reduce the hospitalization burden during peak seasons.
Clinicians should maintain a high index of suspicion for RSV during the winter months, particularly when treating elderly patients or those with underlying lung and blood disorders. Although influenza incidence fluctuated more widely year-to-year, RSV demonstrated a consistent upward trend in registered cases. Therefore, early diagnosis and preventive strategies, including vaccination, are essential for improving outcomes. As we integrate new immunizations into adult health schedules, understanding these epidemiological trends helps in tailoring public health planning and individual patient care.
