Developing psychological resilience in learning has become a global priority as educational systems recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. Recent research utilizing the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2022 data provides new insights into this recovery. The study, involving over 570,000 students across 80 countries, examines how academic motivation and school support translate into deep learning strategies. Consequently, researchers identified a dual-pathway model where motivation drives cognitive engagement both directly and through perceived support.

How Psychological Resilience in Learning Amplifies Support

The study introduces the concept of resilience as a "selective perceptual amplifier." Specifically, it finds that psychological resilience primarily strengthens the ability of motivated students to recognize and acknowledge the support provided by their schools. Interestingly, resilience did not directly increase engagement strategies on its own. Instead, it facilitated the pathway between a student's internal motivation and their external perception of being supported. Therefore, resilient students are better equipped to notice the resources available to them, which subsequently fuels their cognitive engagement.

Universal Importance of School Support Systems

Notably, the connection between perceived school support and engagement remained robust across various national and gender groups. While some differences appeared—such as OECD membership slightly weakening the motivation-to-support path—the core influence of support on learning remained universal. Furthermore, gender only moderated the direct path between motivation and engagement. These findings suggest that while internal motivation is vital, the environment must also be perceived as supportive for students to fully utilize deep learning strategies. Accordingly, educational interventions should focus on resilience-sensitive support that accounts for individual student perceptions.

Implications for Clinical Practice and Education

For clinicians and educators in India, these findings highlight the need for a holistic approach to student mental health. Enhancing a child's resilience is not just about emotional stability; it is also about helping them "see" the help available. Consequently, building supportive school environments is a universal requirement for academic success. Moreover, schools can implement resilience-building programs that specifically aim to bridge the gap between student motivation and their utilization of institutional support systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does psychological resilience in learning help students?

Resilience acts as a perceptual amplifier. It helps students who are already motivated to better recognize the support provided by their school, which then leads to higher engagement in complex learning tasks.

Does school support affect all students the same way?

While the impact of support is universally positive, the research shows that resilient students are more likely to perceive and utilize this support effectively. Therefore, fostering resilience helps maximize the benefits of school resources.

What is the dual-pathway model of motivation?

The dual-pathway model suggests that academic motivation influences learning in two ways: it directly boosts engagement and it indirectly helps students seek out and appreciate school support, which then further enhances their learning strategies.
