The rising prevalence of Internet Gaming Disorder adolescents has become a significant public health concern across the globe. Researchers have recently identified socially prescribed perfectionism (SPP) as a critical psychological risk factor for this condition. This longitudinal study explores the temporal relationships between perfectionism, resilience, and gaming addiction over an eighteen-month period. Consequently, it provides clinicians with actionable insights into managing adolescent mental health in a digital age.
Socially prescribed perfectionism occurs when individuals believe that others hold unrealistically high expectations of them. Therefore, adolescents often feel intense pressure to perform flawlessly to gain social approval or avoid criticism. This study demonstrated that higher perfectionism at baseline significantly predicted increased gaming disorder symptoms six months later. Moreover, this relationship highlights the severe psychological burden that external expectations place on vulnerable youth.
Resilience serves as a vital protective mechanism against the development of behavioral addictions. Notably, the study revealed that psychological resilience partially mediates the link between perfectionism and gaming habits. When adolescents possess high levels of resilience, they can better navigate the stress of social pressures. However, high levels of perfectionism often erode this internal strength over time. Consequently, adolescents may turn to online gaming as a maladaptive coping strategy to escape their perceived failures in the real world.
The research identified distinct patterns of vulnerability between male and female participants. Specifically, the mediating role of resilience was found to be much stronger in boys than in girls. Therefore, the path from high perfectionism to gaming addiction via diminished resilience is more pronounced in the male population. Furthermore, clinicians should consider these sex-specific vulnerabilities when they design intervention programs for school-aged children and teenagers.
Addressing the root causes of digital addiction requires more than just limiting screen time or hardware access. Practitioners should focus on fostering psychological resilience within both the family and school environments. Additionally, reducing the perceived social pressure to be perfect can significantly lower the risk of addiction. By strengthening active coping skills, healthcare providers can effectively mitigate the negative impact of perfectionism on overall adolescent well-being.
It is the belief that peers, parents, or society expect an individual to be perfect at all times. This perception creates chronic stress and is a known risk factor for various behavioral disorders.
Resilience helps adolescents handle social pressure and personal failures without resorting to escapist behaviors. It acts as a psychological buffer between external stress and addictive symptoms.
Yes, recent data suggests that the link between perfectionism and gaming addiction is more significant in males. This is primarily because boys often exhibit lower resilience when facing high social pressure.
