The global healthcare landscape is shifting rapidly due to an aging population and a rising prevalence of complex chronic illnesses. Consequently, there is an urgent demand for palliative nursing education that prepares graduates to provide high-quality primary palliative care. While the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) revised its primary palliative care competencies in 2021, many new graduates still report feeling insufficiently prepared. Addressing this gap requires innovative pedagogical strategies that move beyond traditional classroom boundaries.
A recent quasi-nonexperimental study evaluated a multimodal teaching approach centered on interprofessional collaboration and community partnerships. Specifically, researchers utilized a purposeful sample of prelicensure nursing students to test the efficacy of this curriculum. The results showed that UNPCKS-2.0 scores increased from a preintervention mean of 17.60 to a postintervention mean of 18.60. Furthermore, students exhibited a remarkable improvement in interprofessional communication skills. The percentage of students who "strongly agreed" with their ability to communicate effectively rose from 27% to 71% after the intervention.
Moreover, student reflections and survey data highlighted a deeper understanding of quality-of-life support and goals-of-care discussions. These findings suggest that palliative nursing education thrives when it integrates diverse professional perspectives. By collaborating with community partners, nursing programs can provide students with real-world insights into the complexities of serious illness management. Therefore, educators should consider embedding these competencies throughout the entire undergraduate curriculum rather than treating them as isolated topics.
Ultimately, the success of this interprofessional model supports the broader adoption of multimodal teaching in nursing schools. Integrating palliative care competencies early and often ensures that students develop the necessary empathy and clinical skills. In addition, these partnerships help bridge the gap between academic theory and clinical practice. As the burden of chronic disease grows, such educational reforms will become essential for maintaining a resilient and capable nursing workforce.
Interprofessional collaboration allows nursing students to understand the roles of other healthcare providers, such as social workers and physicians. This teamwork is essential for addressing the multifaceted physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of palliative care patients.
Community partnerships provide students with experiential learning opportunities. These real-world interactions improve their confidence in conducting goals-of-care conversations and enhance their ability to support the patient's quality of life.
