Implementing online drug prevention programs represents a modern approach to safeguarding adolescent health in an increasingly digital world. A recent formative evaluation focused on the Brazilian adaptation of the Strengthening Families Program (SFP 10-14), locally named Famílias Fortes. This research investigated the fidelity, appropriateness, and feasibility of delivering these interventions through virtual platforms. Although results showed high participant engagement with video content, researchers identified several technical and organizational barriers. Consequently, these findings offer a critical roadmap for improving virtual family-based interventions globally.
During the evaluation, researchers followed 31 families across five Brazilian cities using a combination of observations and focus groups. While the core elements of the program remained consistent, the fidelity of material delivery was notably low. Facilitators frequently struggled to send audio and video clips as scheduled. Moreover, the study highlighted a significant lack of confidentiality during virtual meetings for adolescents. In contrast, parents reported high satisfaction with the digital accessibility of materials. This duality suggests that while technology increases geographical reach, it also introduces unique logistical hurdles that require specific solutions.
Feasibility analysis revealed substantial challenges, including poor internet connectivity and malfunctioning hardware. Facilitators also reported significant difficulties with time management and expressed a need for more comprehensive digital training. Therefore, the study suggests several critical adaptations before further dissemination. These recommendations include developing a format-specific manual and providing more interactive facilitator training. Furthermore, adopting a hybrid model might better balance the flexibility of online sessions with the security and engagement of in-person interactions.
The primary challenges involve technical barriers like poor internet access, equipment failure, and maintaining session fidelity. Additionally, ensuring a private, confidential space for adolescent participants in a home environment remains difficult.
Facilitators can enhance delivery by using specialized manuals designed for the digital format. Engaging in interactive, technology-focused training sessions also helps them manage virtual group dynamics and time more effectively.
