Researchers at the Interdisciplinary Biotechnology Unit of Aligarh Muslim University recently detected a highly concerning multidrug-resistant bacterial genome in Aligarh's wastewater. Specifically, these organisms resist carbapenems, which clinicians reserve for the most severe infections. However, the rapid spread of NDM variants threatens to make common medical procedures highly dangerous. Currently, researchers have identified at least 94 variants of NDM genes globally. Consequently, these variants are appearing with greater frequency in both community and hospital settings.
