A recent decade-long analysis of the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) provides crucial insights into the epidemiology of these traumas. Most sports-related cases involve blunt force trauma, which can lead to scrotal hematomas or, in severe instances, testicular rupture. Because testicular rupture is a surgical emergency, doctors must rule it out quickly using scrotal ultrasound. Moreover, delayed treatment can negatively impact future fertility and endocrine function.
Enhanced protective equipment remains the cornerstone of injury reduction. Despite the clear benefits of athletic cups, adherence to safety standards remains low in many community sports. Targeted education for coaches, parents, and athletes can improve the use of protective gear. Additionally, sport-specific guidelines should emphasize the necessity of groin protection in high-contact activities. By implementing these measures, we can significantly reduce the long-term morbidity associated with genital trauma.
