When evaluating patients with persistent or treatment-resistant mood disorders, clinicians should gently explore family histories of collective or systemic adversity. Standardizing validated depression screening tools, such as the Patient Health Questionnaire, helps identify escalating symptom trajectories early. Furthermore, treatment plans should incorporate evidence-based psychotherapies, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy, and family-focused interventions.
