A recent scoping review emphasizes that geriatric oral health integration is essential for maintaining the quality of life in older adults. Although oral health directly impacts systemic wellness, many national health frameworks still overlook this critical link. Therefore, researchers conducted a scoping review to examine current policy approaches across various nations.
Furthermore, the study analyzed nearly 2,000 documents from 52 countries to identify evidence of oral health inclusion in geriatric health strategies. Specifically, it looked for oral health within broader contexts like palliative care, mental health, and chronic disease prevention. Consequently, the results showed that while some documents mention dental care, the representation of dental stakeholders remains remarkably limited. In addition, many policies only include oral health as a minor recommendation rather than a primary objective or measurable indicator. However, successful geriatric oral health integration requires clear strategies and intersectoral collaboration to be effective.
Because oral disease can exacerbate chronic conditions like diabetes and malnutrition, policymakers must prioritize comprehensive care models. In India, the National Programme for Health Care of the Elderly (NPHCE) provides a foundation for geriatric services. Nevertheless, dental health often remains isolated from primary medical assessments. Thus, implementing integrated frameworks like the World Health Organization's ICOPE can help bridge this gap. Ultimately, moving beyond superficial policy mentions will significantly improve health outcomes for seniors across the country.
Many national frameworks prioritize life-threatening chronic diseases over dental care. Consequently, oral health frequently lacks specific funding or dedicated strategies in broader geriatric health frameworks.
Systems can achieve better outcomes by including dental professionals in national policy planning. Moreover, they should adopt integrated screening tools during routine medical exams to ensure early detection of oral issues.
