Epidermal necrolysis sequelae represent a significant long-term burden for survivors of Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis. Recently, a comprehensive cohort study evaluated 129 adult patients to determine the prevalence and severity of these complications. Psychological distress also plays a major role in the post-discharge period. Nearly 30% of survivors reported severe psychological symptoms, which notably hindered their return to professional life. Interestingly, these mental health outcomes were most strongly associated with a prior psychiatric history rather than the extent of the skin detachment. Because 48.9% of active patients could not return to work, the socio-professional impact is substantial. Consequently, integrating mental health support into the recovery plan is vital for successful rehabilitation.
Clustering analysis has identified three distinct patient profiles regarding complications. Some survivors experience mild or no issues, while others face severe cutaneous and pulmonary damage. The third group typically presents with multi-organ involvement, including ocular, oral, and genital sequelae. Furthermore, these diverse outcomes suggest that a \"one-size-fits-all\" approach is insufficient. Instead, a multidisciplinary and personalized follow-up strategy is essential to address the unique needs of each survivor. Personalized care plans can significantly mitigate the long-term burden of the disease.
