The global pandemic significantly disrupted the lives of people with dementia (PWD) and their informal caregivers. While numerous studies described these impacts, moving this knowledge into clinical practice remains challenging. Consequently, establishing dementia care research priorities has become essential for creating regionally sensitive policies. A recent 14-country study, including India, utilized a consensus-based approach to identify the most pressing needs for the future.
Researchers identified 38 distinct topics through a systematic literature review and surveys involving PWD, caregivers, and healthcare professionals. Furthermore, these stakeholders prioritized themes that overlapped across different regions, from Europe to the Global South. Specifically, the findings highlighted four critical areas: physical function, mental health, disease progression, and healthcare access. Therefore, future research must focus on how social isolation and service closures accelerate cognitive decline.
Moreover, the study translated these priorities into three actionable lines of research. First, scientists must investigate the underlying mechanisms of how restrictions affect well-being. Second, educators should design improved training programs for informal caregivers. Finally, stakeholders emphasized the importance of improving information access during crises. By aligning international efforts, the medical community can better support vulnerable populations during future public health emergencies.
For clinicians in India, these results underscore the importance of monitoring home-bound patients more closely. Because the pandemic worsened behavior and increased caregiver distress, proactive intervention is necessary. Healthcare providers should prioritize education for families to manage disease progression effectively. Additionally, leveraging digital health solutions can bridge the gap in access to specialized care.
